Darley Memorial Hall is 70!
Darley Memorial Hall opened in Darley on 15th November 2017, which will make it 70 years old in 2017! Of course, it started life as the Canteen at Scar House Reservoir, so it is actually much older, but we think that 70 years in Darley is worth celebrating. A grant has been secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund, so work has now started.
A book will be produced, with photos showing events at the Hall through the decades, and memories of local people who attended. Throughout the 50s and 60s it was THE place to be on Saturday nights, as Darley Dances were famous throughout the area. Each week saw three or four hundred people attending, and 4 or 5 coaches were laid on to transport people back to Pateley Bridge, Harrogate, Boroughbridge etc at the end of the night. Memories collected so far prove that it was a lively place, and people from Leeds came out on their motorbikes too.
We have already found some couples who met at the Hall, and you may well know of others... We'd love to hear from them and include them in the proposed celebrations in November 2017. A week of events is planned to celebrate the Anniversary.
